Restoration at the British Library

THE IMPORTANCE OF GURU GRANTH SAHIB JI TO SIKHS is without parallel. It is not a Holy Book or scripture in the common understanding of religions. The Guru Granth Sahib Ji is considered to be Guru Nanak himself as were the 9 successors. The word of the Guru or the ‘shabad’ is the Eternal Guru. Accordingly, the Guru is treated with the utmost care and is the heartbeat of the Sikh World.

The SEC first met with the team from the British Library in 2002 after learning of a number of Gurmukhi manuscripts that were in need of restoration. It quickly became apparent that a number of these were derived from the Adi Granth and were quite literally falling apart at the seams. They needed urgent restoration if they were to be saved and so were adopted by the SEC who have funded the restoration project ever since.
