The Ascension Akhara

We emphasise learning by doing, in both teams and independently. We integrate learning with productive outputs, working on real life projects that will encourage our attendees to grow and adapt, whilst sparking their desire to want to attend each week.

AIMS

We aim to inspire children and young people to comprehend the Sikh way of life as being more than that of a religion whose practices they adopt, and whose history they study; it is an all-encompassing doctrine for our times that is universally applicable, providing a bedrock of reasoning and values that help the individual to grow into a being capable of making sound decisions and elevating themselves and those around them. We endeavour to prepare children and young people for the World of today and for the World of tomorrow yet to materialise.

OBJECTIVES

Children and young people are in a range of educational institutions during the week that will have varying levels of influence over their development; in the time they are with us, our focus is to invite our attendees to channel their questions, embrace curiosity and personalise their education with us. Parental involvement is key to an attendee having a beneficial experience: parents are encouraged to study our (adult) Sikh Studies course and can access guidance material accompanying what the children and young people will be engaged in each week.

Attendees will be structured into four class categories:

Reception, Y1, Y2
Y3, Y4, Y5
Y6, Y7, Y8
Y9, Y10, Y11

Each class will run for 90 minutes split into:

Socialising conversation in Punjabi: 20 minutes
Assembly: 10 minutes
Introduction and teaching: 10 minutes
Activity: 45 minutes
Closing: 5 minutes
