Punjabi University Patiala graciously invited the chair of the Sikh Education Council, Dr Pargat Singh to be the guest of honour at the launch of the Punjabipedia Android app today. The app, developed by the Punjabipedia Centre based at the University, was released with much fanfare, presided over by the Vice Chancellor of the University, Dr Arvind.
Co-coordinators of the Centre, Dr Vishal Goyal and Dr Rajwinder Singh, expect traffic through the app to be much heavier than is experienced by the website, which has been of great use to many students of the Punjabi language around the World for some time now. Naturally an app was the next step but it was important to them to provide a fully functional download before launching. Talking about the importance of the app and the Punjabipedia project itself, Dr Arvind stated, “Technological support is necessary for every language today. Punjabipedia will help in development of Punjabi language.”
Dr Pargat Singh welcomed the gathering attendees in Patiala via video conference as they were joined by other invited guests from abroad. In his opening comments, Dr Singh commented that, “Punjabis all over the World would benefit from the app.” The Sikh Education Council has built up a strong relationship with the team at Patiala University and Dr Singh went on to commend them on the fine work they are doing with Punjabipedia, as well as in the broader area of Punjabi language studies.
